Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport Runway 1-19 Reopens
KANSAS CITY, Mo., August 9, 2006 – The Kansas City Aviation Department has re-opened the 7,000-foot Runway 1-19 (the main north-south runway on the airfield) at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC) one week ahead of schedule. The project included completely removing and replacing the pavement and electrical systems for runway 1-19. The 5,050-foot Runway 3-21 re-opened earlier this summer after the intersection of the two runways was rehabilitated.
Work on the project began in March 2005 when pavement and electrical work started on the north end of Runway 1-19 and its taxiways. The runway now features new pavement, as well as electrical improvements on portions of the runway, taxiways and ramps.
The runway project is part of a $69.6 million improvement program designed to enhance the safety of aircraft operations, maintain existing airfield facilities and fuel economic growth at the general aviation airport well into the future. Future projects call for the relocation of the airport’s fuel farm and constructing new aircraft hangars.
Dedicated in 1927 by Charles Lindbergh, MKC was Kansas City’s first major center for commercial aviation and served as the headquarters for Trans World Airlines. In 1972, most commercial air traffic transferred to Kansas City International Airport. Since then, MKC has evolved into one of the busiest corporate aviation airports in the country. The airport’s proximity to the city’s center makes it ideal for corporate aviation and is easily accessible for leisure pilots storing aircraft or planning weekend trips.
The Kansas City Airport System is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and is supported wholly by airport user charges. No general tax fund revenues are used for the administration, promotion, operation, or maintenance of the airports in the system.
