The first phase of BWI’s exciting, new concourse complex to
consolidate the operations of BWI’s largest carrier, Southwest Airlines,
opens May 2005. This phase includes the new Concourse A with six
gates, expandable to 11, when the need arises, as well as the the central
area between Concourses A and B with an additional five gates resulting
in a total of 26 gates on both concourses upon completion later this
year. Southwest currently offers 164 daily nonstop flights from BWI to
34 nonstop destinations.
New Ticket Counters and Check-in Lobby
Southwest passengers at BWI will immediately notice our new
ticket lobby. The bright, ticketing lobby is 60 percent larger than the
existing terminal lobby and is connected to the BWI Hourly Garage
via our new Skywalk system. The area features more than 50 ticketing
positions, including numerous Rapid Check-In Kiosks for faster check-ins.
New Shopping and Dining Experience
McDonalds, Charlie Chiangs, Phillips Seafood, to name a few,
are among the many food and beverage outlets coming to A/B to tempt
your taste buds. A large central food court, with wide dramatic views of
the airfield, is the centerpiece of the Concourse A/B complex. Retailers
joining BWI to enhance your travelling experience include Fire and Ice,
Borders and Jos. A. Bank — their first airport location.
State-of-the-art Security
Two new security checkpoints will open as well — one on
each side of the Southwest check-in area. A total of 11 security
lanes will be available for Southwest passengers. In addition, a
state-of-the-art in-line system will screen checked luggage fed
from the Southwest curbside check-ins or at the ticket counters.
Easy Connections
Connecting passengers will also find the new complex easy
to use. No more connections with 25 minute walks between flights
on different concourses! Convenient escalators, elevators and
moving sidewalks thoughout the area help to speed you between
flights behind security. With the extra time you will have to decide
which store to visit first!
Easier Arrivals
The new services continue! Five new large baggage carousels
will speed your bags to you upon arrival at BWI. We will expand the
area to include a sixth baggage carousel when it is needed.
More on the Way
Now that the first phase is complete, phase two will
start. Over the next several months, we will reconstruct the
Concourse B gates — scheduled to finish in the Fall of this year.
More parking, more gates, more food, more shopping, all for you.
